How to connect Instagram to Facebook | Instagram Academy

·

Welcome to a new lesson of our Instagram Academy. Today we tackle a subject the Instagram community cares a great deal about: how to connect Instagram to Facebook. According to the statistics on social media use, an Instagram user generally also uses the network Mark Zuckerberg built. And very often they want to post a photo on both platforms, to show it to their Instagram followers and their Facebook friends alike.

Can you avoid making two separate posts? Of course: just connect Instagram to Facebook and you can publish once, with the content shared to the second platform automatically (or not).

Since Facebook bought Instagram, using the two networks together has been made steadily simpler. You can connect Instagram not only to your Facebook profile, but also to a Facebook page, and even the stories of the two networks. Let’s see how.

If you are new here, in our Academy you will find plenty of other lessons on Instagram, on SEO, on Facebook and on growth hacking.

Connecting Instagram to Facebook: a personal profile

Plenty of people choose to connect Instagram to Facebook so that content posted on the first network goes straight to the second. The process is very simple and quick, and it spares you the tedium of publishing the same thing twice, whether a photo, an album or a video.

Here are the steps for connecting Instagram to a personal Facebook profile.

  • Open your Instagram app and tap the three-line icon at the top.
  • A side menu opens, with the “Settings” cog at the bottom.
  • Tap “Settings” and scroll down to “Privacy and Security”, where you will find “Linked accounts”.
  • Once in “Linked accounts”, a list of networks you can connect to Instagram appears: Facebook, obviously, but also Twitter, Tumblr, Ameba and Ok.ru
  • Tap Facebook and choose “Continue” to connect Facebook through its app or by entering your account details manually.

Once that is done, the two accounts are connected.

Connecting Instagram to Facebook: a page

If your aim is to connect Instagram to a Facebook page, the process is just as simple. The first thing to do is make sure you are an administrator of the page you want to connect.

How do you check? Open Facebook and go to the page in question. Open “settings” and scroll to “Page roles”. You will find “existing page roles” with the list of people holding a role: administrator, editor, moderator, advertiser or analyst.

Once that is confirmed, go to Instagram and follow the same steps as for a personal profile.

  • Tap the three-line icon at the top.
  • Tap the “Settings” cog in the menu that appears.
  • Scroll down to “Privacy and Security”, where you will find “Linked accounts”
  • In “Linked accounts” there is the list of networks you can connect to Instagram: Facebook, which is what we are after, and also Twitter, Tumblr, Ameba and Ok.ru
  • Tap Facebook and choose “Continue” to connect it through its app or by entering your account details manually.
  • Under “Facebook profile” you will find the name of the page, or the list of pages, you administer. Tap the one you want to connect and that is that.

How to share from Instagram to Facebook

Your Instagram account is now connected to Facebook, whether to a personal profile or the page you chose. How does sharing work? You have two options: post automatically or do it by hand.

Sharing from Instagram to Facebook automatically

For the first, you have to tick “Share your posts to Facebook”.

Where is it?

Retrace the steps above: Settings – Privacy and Security – Linked accounts – Facebook. At the bottom you will find “Preferences”, where you can choose not only to share your Instagram posts straight to your Facebook profile, but also your stories: turn that on and every story you publish on Instagram appears automatically in your Facebook stories as well.

Sharing from Instagram to Facebook by hand

Want to choose which content gets reshared from Instagram to Facebook? No problem. Instagram lets you share to Facebook later, perhaps to wait for a time when your Facebook friends are more active, or to change something in the caption.

How?

First, untick “Share your posts to Facebook” if you turned it on earlier. Then you have two options:

  • Share a post while you are publishing it
  • Share a post after you have published it

In the first case, just tick “Facebook” before tapping “Share” at the top right. In the second, go to your profile and tap the thumbnail of the photo you want to share to Facebook. The photo opens full screen, showing the caption and comments below. Tap the share icon — the three dots joined by two lines.

The “Complete action using” section opens with the list of apps you can share through. Alongside Facebook you will find Gmail, WhatsApp, Twitter, Pinterest and others. Choose the Facebook icon and within moments your content appears in your friends’ feed.
