Instagram business account: why bother
Instagram’s success has grown exponentially in recent years, to the point that people are starting to use this network the way they use Google — to look for information, products or people. So companies need to make the most of the platform by being found when users search for something close to the product or service they offer.
The Instagram market is full of companies that have decided to take their share and set up a business account on Instagram.
But we need to understand why. To do that we have to look at what a business account on Instagram can do that a personal profile cannot.
What does a business account on Instagram give you?
You can:
- analyse post performance with real-time metrics that update through the day;
- analyse your followers and how they interact with your posts;
- have a button that lets people contact you more simply and directly;
- create sponsored posts or stories to reach more people and build awareness of the person and the brand.

Setting up a company profile on Instagram
You can either create a business account on Instagram from scratch or switch an existing personal account to a company one. How?
If you are working out how to create an Instagram business account, you are in the right place. Here is how:
- open Instagram
- tap the three-line symbol
- tap “Settings”
- go to “Account”
- look for “Switch to a business account”
- link your account to a Facebook page belonging to your company
- tap “done”.
Having a Facebook page linked to your Instagram company profile is essential if you want all the extra features of a business account on Instagram.
The linked Facebook page also lets you manage the brand’s geotag feature and gives you access to Business Manager for running advertising campaigns.

Instagram business account: the basic settings
Once the settings are done and you know how to set up your Instagram company profile, you are ready to fill in the basic information your new followers will see and that will represent you.
What should you watch out for and lean on in how you communicate on this network?
When creating a business account on Instagram, or switching to one, remember that the image we want to give of ourselves has to be simple, consistent and immediate.
The things to consider are:
- profile picture: this is pulled straight from the one set on the Facebook page. That doesn’t mean it can’t be changed — you can edit it — though a consistent image across networks is always recommended;
- bio: short and effective. In a few lines you have to say who you are, what you do and where you are. It is worth including details such as an email address and a call to action, better known as a CTA. At the end you should put a link to the landing page you want to promote.
For a successful business account on Instagram, two more small suggestions.
Write the bio in your audience’s main language. If you are a brand with an international audience, English is the sensible choice; if you are a local brand, don’t be seduced by the glamour of going international. Write in the local language.
Second, the link in your bio should not be long. Use tools that shorten links which, for tracking reasons, are often stuffed with parameters that are not exactly pretty.
