As we know, Facebook and its boss Mark Zuckerberg bought Instagram in 2012 for a billion dollars. Since then Instagram has stepped up its battle against “unorthodox” practices, so buying followers, using bots and the rest have come under the magnifying glass.

Because of that scrutiny the number of blocked or limited profiles has risen considerably.

So according to Instagram, what should you do to grow a profile without buying followers and without bots and other tricks from “Instagram consultants“?

What Instagram says to do is essentially this:

Optimise your Instagram profile: profile photo, bio, link. Everything has to be optimised and thought through against your Instagram strategy. Think about why you are on Instagram and the goal you want to reach, and decide accordingly.
Publish regularly: consistency matters a great deal. Try to publish at least one post a day, more if you can — what matters is giving your followers what they expect. Go live: video is the content Instagram users tend to like most, and if it is live so much the better. So use stories and Instagram TV (IGTV).
Think about storytelling: think about your Instagram strategy and tell your story. Find your style and make it recognisable — be distinctive.

The quality of your account gets worse. You will end up with hundreds or thousands of people, depending on how many followers you bought, outside your audience. Those profiles will very rarely interact with your content and so will not raise the reach of your posts.
The numbers will look wrong. You could end up with a profile with 30,000 followers scraping a miserable 100 likes per post. That is a clear signal of bought followers, read negatively by companies, and it will keep collaborations out of reach.

Do it — but fold buying followers into a complete strategy.

Buying followers on its own lands you in the situation described in the section on why not to. Set alongside more “ethical” practices and organised into a strategy, it is something that in my view brings advantages.

The thing to understand is that selling products or services on Instagram, or becoming an influencer, takes followers who match the goal you have set, followers who interact with your posts, and a good follower count to encourage other people to follow you.

So how do you do it?

Build a strategy that includes:

Buying followers, Italian ones where possible if Italy is your market, to raise the follower count. And be careful not to buy plenty of followers in one go — better small purchases day by day (100 followers a day, for instance) than a large batch at once. That gives the impression of gradual, steady growth.
Buying likes, comments and video views, so that followers and interactions grow in parallel. If you buy 10,000 followers and the likes and comments don’t rise accordingly, anyone looking at your profile will immediately see something is off.
Growing the profile organically following Instagram’s guidelines. So, as we said above: optimise the profile, use the right hashtags, create distinctive, excellent content, interact with your followers and with other profiles.
