Regretting having accepted someone’s friend request on Facebook?

It can happen: when you add someone to your Facebook contacts, you don’t expect them to end up insulting you, messaging you non-stop, or filling your profile with spam links.

With Facebook you can protect yourself, both before these things happen (by setting up the privacy on your profile) and when they actually do.

But did you know you could also receive messages you don’t like on Facebook Messenger?

We’re now going to show you:

  • how to block a Facebook friend without unfriending them
  • how to block a friend on Facebook without them noticing
  • how to block a Facebook user who isn’t your friend

How to Block Someone on Facebook?

In this section we’ll see how to block a Facebook friend without unfriending them.

Facebook gives users the option to restrict who can see your profile to a specific list of users that you choose. This means you can hide the content you post on Facebook from certain people — it’s a sort of softer block.

The feature is called the Restricted List.

The Restricted List is available to everyone, and it’s a list of people who will no longer be able to see your posts, your status updates or your photos. This way you can add people on Facebook and choose what to show them and what not to.

So how do you block a Facebook friend without unfriending them?

  • Open Facebook and click the gear icon, go to Account Settings and select the Blocking option.
  • Then select Edit List under the Restricted List entry.

Done! Now you know how to block a person without removing them from your Facebook friends.

So what happens when you block a friend on Facebook?

The friend you block won’t be able to see what you post, won’t be able to start conversations with you, and won’t be able to search for you to add you as a friend, because they won’t see you anymore. When you block a friend, they can no longer take any action — they can no longer interact with you in any way.

So how can you block a friend on Facebook?

An easy way to block a friend on Facebook is to go to the search bar at the top of the Facebook site, type the first and last name of the person you want to block, and below their cover image you’ll see three dots (on the right).

Select the dots and at the bottom you’ll see the option: Block. Click Continue and confirm.

Done — you’ve just blocked your friend on Facebook.

As we saw in the previous lesson, Facebook chat integrates with Facebook Messenger, a messaging app built into Facebook.

You can access Facebook Messenger from your PC too, and it lets you chat with people in your contacts, but also with people who aren’t among your Facebook friends but reach out to you.

First of all, you should know that you can block a contact on Facebook Messenger who’s on your friends list while keeping the friendship, which means you’ll keep seeing the content they publish.

Blocking a user on Facebook Messenger means they won’t be able to message you or call you, for example.

You can do this from your PC, from Android or from iOS.

In any case, open your conversation with that person, tap the Information “i” on Android and scroll down to Block, then select the option: Block all messages.

On iOS, open the Facebook Messenger conversation, tap the name at the top of the conversation, scroll down and tap Block. Finally, select the option next to it that says Block all messages.

Can I block a friend on Facebook without unfriending them?

What happens when I block someone on Facebook?

A blocked person can no longer see what you post, start conversations with you, or find you in search to send a friend request. In practice they can no longer take any action toward you or interact with you in any way on the platform.

Will the person know I blocked them on Facebook?

Can I protect my profile before problems happen?

Yes, Facebook lets you act preventively by setting up the privacy options on your profile, controlling who can see your posts and who can contact you. Combined with being selective about friend requests from people you do not know, this greatly reduces spam, unwanted messages, and other unpleasant situations.
