Do you know how to create a Facebook group?
First of all, welcome to the third lesson of the Facebook Academy.
As you’ve probably guessed, in this lesson we’ll be talking about how to create a group on Facebook. But before we do, let’s start by explaining what a Facebook group actually is.
A Facebook group is a virtual space made up of Facebook users who share the same interests. A group on Facebook can therefore help you share content with a more or less restricted circle of people.

Types of Facebook groups
There are three types of Facebook groups you can create, with three different privacy settings.
- Public Facebook group: this type of group is open to anyone.
What does that mean? It means anyone can join the group, be invited to the group, or be added to the group on Facebook. Everyone can see the group’s name, its members, the description, the tags, the location and the posts other members publish, find the group’s name in Facebook search, and see stories about the group.
- Closed Facebook group: this one limits a few things.
Anyone can ask to join, or be added or invited by a member, but only current members can see the posts that group members publish; and only current members can see stories about the Facebook group, both in the News Feed and in search results. So everyone can see that the group exists, but its content is for members only.
- Secret Facebook group: to get into a secret group, you need to be added or invited by a member.
Only current members can see who belongs to the group, the posts they publish, and stories about the group. Both current and former members, however, can see the group’s name, description, location and tags, and can find the group in search. In practice, only members can find it and view its content.
Now that we’ve covered what Facebook groups are, let’s see how to create a Facebook group on your PC, smartphone and iPhone.

Creating a Facebook group from your PC
I’m about to give you all the information you need to open a Facebook group from your PC.
Why create a Facebook group in the first place? As we’ve seen, it gives you a group of users who share the same interests, passions or problems, and with whom you can build an ongoing conversation.
If you decide to create a Facebook group, you’ll be able to share your thoughts and your posts only and exclusively with the people you choose! No one outside the people you include will be able to see anything you publish inside your Facebook group.
So what are you waiting for? Create one of your own! Let me show you how.
Sitting in front of your PC? Here’s what you need to do:
- click and open the “Create a Facebook group” page here. If you’re not already logged in, you’ll need to log in first;
- at the top you’ll see a green button labeled Create Group (with a +) — click it;
- a window will open with fields such as Name your group and Add some people. Proceed like this: first give your group a name, and right after that you can already include people by entering their first and last name or their email address;
- as you start to create your Facebook group, you’ll be asked what kind of privacy you want to give it. Choose the type of group you want to create based on the information I gave you above.

- once you’ve set the group’s privacy, hit the Create button. You’ll then need to pick an icon to represent your group, and confirm with Ok;
- a new page will open that lets you add a photo, which you can upload from your PC (Upload photo) or pick from the ones you already have on Facebook (click Choose photo);
- now, to create your first piece of content, you’ll see the Post field right below the photo — all you have to do is add your content: a photo, a video, or start a live video that members will see instantly;
- below the group name, on your right, you’ll see a series of sections you’re free to fill in however you like. You’ll be able to add the group’s About info, i.e. a description of what it covers; the Discussion area lets you create the content you’ll share with the other members; the Members section lets you see who the members are and edit their roles; Events lets you create events for the group and share them; Manage group lets you, for example, view the activity of admins and other collaborators, approve membership requests, and schedule content to post.

Keep in mind that if you ever want to delete the group, you’ll first need to remove the members, then leave and delete the group. Here’s the Facebook help page that explains how to delete a Facebook group — you’ll find it here.
Creating a Facebook group on iOS devices
Creating a Facebook group on an iOS device is really easy!
Here’s how:
- first of all, download the Facebook App if you haven’t already, and open it. Sign up if you don’t have an account yet, or log in if prompted;
- at the bottom right you’ll find a button that looks like this: (≡), tap it and select the Groups option;
- at the top right you’ll see a (+) symbol to create a group — tap it and get started;
- you’ll need to choose the group name, and you can add a photo to represent it (you’ll see the camera icon);
- at the bottom there’s a menu that lets you add members: add them, then tap Next;
- the group’s privacy settings will appear too, so here, just like in the PC instructions, you’ll need to choose whether you want to create a public group, a closed group or a secret group, and then tap Create.
Now that you know how to create a Facebook group on iOS, you can start publishing content right below the group’s name and photo.
That’s also where you’ll find the settings to fine-tune your group.
If you ever want to delete it, you’ll first need to remove the members, then leave the group yourself, and then delete it.
Creating a Facebook group on Android
To create a Facebook group on Android (that is, on a smartphone or tablet) you obviously need to have the official Facebook App installed.
If you’ve installed it, signed up and logged in, then proceed as follows:
- at the top you’ll see a menu that looks like this (≡) — tap it and the Groups option will appear; after selecting it you’ll also see the one labeled Create group;
- you’ll immediately see the section where you enter the group name, so type it in there, then use the camera icon to add a representative photo;
- right below, you can search for names or email addresses and select the people you want to add to your group. Once you’ve selected them, tap Next (top right);
- now you can choose your privacy settings: decide whether you want to create a public Facebook group (which everyone can see, everyone can join, everyone can check who’s in it, and so on), create a closed Facebook group (posts aren’t visible to non-members), or create a private group on Facebook (visible only to group members — for everyone else it simply won’t exist);
- once you’ve picked the option you prefer, go ahead and click Create.

So, did you manage to create a Facebook group from your smartphone?
A few final notes before you go:
- remember that you can change the settings via the icon below the group’s name and photo;
- to delete the group, you’ll first need to remove all the members, then leave the group yourself so you can delete the group itself.
Was this helpful? We hope so!
