How to get the blue tick on Instagram is certainly one of the bigger worries for anyone with a real following on social media who wants that recognition from the platform.
The blue tick on Instagram is almost exactly that — recognition — since when you see it next to a handle you know the profile is genuine and belongs to the public figure you were looking for.
It often happens that people use handles that are not immediately traceable to them. The web is also full of fake profiles, fan pages and namesakes, so sometimes a single search throws up countless possible results.
How do you verify your profile on Instagram?
To make a profile official you have to make a request to the network. Simply requesting verification does not mean you get it. Don’t worry, though — we will also look at what to do when the request is refused.

How to verify your Instagram profile
We keep talking about the blue tick on Instagram without having explained what it actually is. The blue tick is nothing more than a verification badge displayed next to the profile name. It conveys that the profile of a public figure on Instagram, or simply a brand or company, is official.
Since 2018 Instagram has decided not to verify profiles on its own initiative but to wait for a request from the profile in question.
How? Through the app, like this:
- Open the official Instagram app
- Tap your profile picture at the bottom right
- Once on your profile page, tap the icon with three parallel lines at the top right
- Tap “settings” at the bottom right and go to the “account” section
- Find and tap “Request verification”
You are then taken to the section for requesting the blue tick on Instagram, where a simple form has to be filled in with this information:
- username (pre-filled)
- first and last name
- known as (to be filled in if you have a name you are known by that doesn’t match your legal name)
- category (a dropdown opens with the broad categories you might belong to — whether you work in or are known for music, the sport you play, whether you are an influencer and much more)
- you are also asked to upload a copy of your ID document

Once the form is done, tap “send” and wait for the request to be picked up. Within a few days you will know whether it was accepted. If it was, the famous blue tick on Instagram appears next to your username.
If Instagram decides not to add that value to your profile, you can still ask for another review. The one catch? You have to wait at least 30 days between the refusal and the new request.

How to verify an Instagram profile without the tick: workable alternatives
So far we have seen that a public figure on Instagram can request the blue tick.
What about everyone else? If you are among those Instagram decided not to give the blue tick, you are in the right place. We will look at how to make a profile “official” in other ways.
If you have searched the whole web for ways to work out how to get the blue tick on Instagram and the one official route didn’t work, let’s go through some unconventional alternatives for making your profile look as official as possible.
Report the users trying to steal your identity
First, start reporting all the fake accounts trying to steal your identity online. You would be surprised how often this happens and to how many people — it is one of the main reasons Instagram introduced this feature.
How do you report a fake public figure on Instagram? If you have come across a fake profile and rightly decided to report it, go to that person’s profile and:
- tap the three dots at the top right
- tap “report”
- you can also pick one of the reasons you decided to report the profile — spam, for instance, or inappropriate content. If you choose the latter, another menu opens so you can specify why you think the content isn’t appropriate.

Verifying an Instagram profile without the blue tick
If you want the same result as someone who can and does verify their Instagram profile but without the blue tick, beyond everything above you can work on the other networks you are on.
You can try to get “verified” status on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, and use your bio to add links to those profiles. That way anyone moving between your profiles can confirm you are exactly the person they were looking for.
The bio is one of the most important places on a profile. Why not use it? You can put direct links to the other networks you are on, to show consistency, and since you can edit your profile you can also add the link to your official website.
