If you are reading this lesson you may have received the message from Instagram saying: this action has been blocked by Instagram.

What does an Instagram temporary block mean?
An Instagram temporary block means certain actions have been blocked, so your Instagram profile is open and active but limited.
It may be that you used bots too heavily to grow your Instagram profile, and Instagram, as we know, doesn’t agree, because the rules forbid them. As we saw in another lesson, you have to know how to use them to avoid penalties.
It may also be that you went too far doing things manually, too often, and went past Instagram’s limits. Too many likes in a short time? Too many comments in a short time? Followed or unfollowed a great many accounts quickly? If your Instagram account has been blocked, you very probably did one of those.
So the Instagram temporary block is a penalty Instagram applies to anyone who broke the rules and used the platform inappropriately.
It matters to know exactly what causes an Instagram block. Let’s look at the most frequent reasons.

Instagram blocked: what causes it?
The causes of a temporary Instagram account block can be many.
- Using bots. Above all with a new profile, heavy use of bots and automation is a bad idea. Remember too that if you use bots you should not also act manually while the bot is working, and above all use them well and sparingly;
- post scheduling at unsuitable hours;
- you may have done too many follows/unfollows;
- leaving too many standardised comments;
- you look like a suspicious profile and Instagram has doubts about you.
Which actions does Instagram block?
If you have run into a temporary penalty on Instagram, you will be limited in what you can do on other people’s profiles.
You can scroll your Instagram gallery and view your own content, but you will not be able to:
- Follow or unfollow
- Comment on photos and stories
- Send private messages
- Like other profiles’ photos
There are hourly limits, which we will come to, that have to be respected — otherwise you risk ending up in this situation.
How long does an Instagram temporary block last?
Just discovered your Instagram account is temporarily blocked? Panicking and wondering how long it will last?
We can cheer you up: it won’t last long, though we cannot give an exact duration. Generally what it takes is waiting 24 hours and the profile is unblocked.
It depends on the case, though: it can take less time or more, depending on how Instagram was used and how many times the rules were broken. Instagram is stricter with anyone making the same mistake repeatedly — and be careful, because your Instagram profile could be closed permanently.
Bear this in mind: there are limits imposed by Instagram to respect for every action available.

Instagram limits: do you know them?
As we said, Instagram has imposed limits on how many people you can follow and unfollow, how many comments you can leave a day, and how many likes.
As you can read in point 15 of the terms of use, Instagram works to preserve the actions of real people rather than automated interactions from spiders (bots).
These limits also vary with how long the profile has existed: a new profile has different limits from one that has been around more than three months. They also vary with the profile’s age, its follower count, its level of engagement (whether it gets plenty of comments and likes or not), and whether the account is active or dormant.
Here are the Instagram limits.
Follow/unfollow
Profiles active for more than three months can follow more people than newly opened ones.
Engagement affects this: the more engagement your profile has, the more people you can follow.
Accounts with more followers can follow more people.
- New profiles (under 3 months): in the first week they can follow and unfollow between 300 and 350 people a day. In the following weeks that can rise by 50 to 70 a day, up to 800 a day.
- Profiles with plenty of followers, active for more than 3 months: they can follow or unfollow more than 45 people an hour, up to 1,080 a day.
Leaving comments
Commenting means creating the chance to start an interaction with your profile. Be careful not to overdo it, though.
The recommended limits for comments on Instagram are: no more than 250 comments a day.
Comments are used to build engagement: it is better to leave manual comments than standardised ones, identical for every profile the bot works through.
Don’t use an overly aggressive strategy — it would be counterproductive.
Limits on Instagram likes
The likes you can leave daily are based on the follows and unfollows you do during the day. So the likes available to you vary with your actions.
How do we work out how many likes you can leave on Instagram? There is a small magic formula you can use:
Take the number of follows/unfollows you do in a day and multiply by 1.5:
Follows/unfollows x 1.5 = like limit
So if you do 600 follow/unfollow actions, you can leave 800 likes.

Conclusion
To close, our advice is not to use bots if you are at the start of your Instagram journey; and to use them sparingly, so you don’t end up with Instagram blocked.
Don’t push to the limit — do fewer actions than the numbers above. You will be calmer and your Instagram profile won’t be blocked.
Instagram updates often to protect itself from automation platforms: do everything carefully, without going too far.
